Signs of Betta Fish Dropsy

So – What is Dropsy?

Dropsy in fish – meaning in betta fish or any other fish – is a warning sign that the fish has a bacterial infection of the skin. When a betta fish has dropsy, it will look bloated and its fins will look ruffled and not smooth. Some folks say that dropsy makes the fins of the betta fish look like the fingers of a pine cone. Dropsy is an indication that your betta fish is very sick, and you need to take immediate action to make sure that your betta quickly recovers.

The main reason why betta fish get dropsy is because of poor water conditions.

The bacterial infection attacks the kidneys of the fish, which causes them to hold water and become bloated.

If you fail to take immediate action to help your betta fish, it may suffer and die. Most of the time, you can carefully place your betta fish in a temporary holding tank, but you have to remember to only put it in water that has been treated (no chlorine, proper pH). Then you can clean the aquarium or fish bowl properly. Since dropsy is caused by a harmful bacteria, it is of the utmost importance that you clean the betta fish’s home thoroughly. If you do not completely get rid of the harmful bacteria in the aquarium, it will probably multiply and become toxic to the betta (and any other fish) again in just a couple of days.

If you suspect that your betta fish has dropsy, call the store where you got it to find out who you can talk to. Usually they will know what steps to take, or a fish expert that you can talk to that will help you care for your betta and clean up your aquarium/bowl. Local beta fish breeders will also know exactly what to do, and most have medicine if your fish is really sick.

From the very first day that you bring your betta fish home, be on the lookout for any signs of dropsy. It mostly commonly occurs if the betta is overfed, and the excess fish food rots and becomes infested with the bacteria that causes dropsy symptoms. By keeping a regular cleaning schedule for your betta, and by making sure that you clean it’s aquarium/bowl thoroughly, it will be easy to keep your betta fish healthy and dropsy-free.
